We've all heard of time capsules. Think of an archives as a "walk-in" time capsule. It's a place where items which are of permanent value to La Salle are collected and preserved--from vintage books to historic video tapes, from annual reports to classic pennants and freshman beanies.
More than you think. Some people like to look at the calligraphy and content of La Salle's 1863 charter. Others browse through our extensive photographs of campus buildings and personalities, and even scenes of the three campuses which preceded 20th and Olney. Greek organizations, such as Sigma Phi Lambda, have come to the Archives to plan future activities by studying the events which their predecessors carried out.
La Salle, over the years, has generated more publications than people realize. They are frequently utilized, and for good reason. Just think of all of the La Sallian history contained in the following list of periodicals. Perhaps you are or will be in one or more of them!
- Collegian 1931 to present
- Explorer (yearbook) 1940 to present
- La Salle magazine 1956 to present
- La Salle Bulletins (catalogs) 1902 to present
- Four Quarters (literary magazine) 1951 to 1995
- Grimoire (student literary magazine) 1972 to present
- Gender Lines (Women's Studies) 1985 to present
We even have literary newspapers composed by La Salle students in 1878 and 1879. The rebellious 1960s are represented by such offbeat student publications as "The Horse's Mouth," "Phantasmagoria," and even "Hind Quarters."
Perhaps you want to surprise a friend or relative with a photocopy of their yearbook photograph. Maybe you have a term paper assignment and are looking for a theme or approach with a unique "La Salle" twist. We even have a reading room if you just want to browse. The Archives are rich with history that is useful to both the everyday student at La Salle and the serious historian.
We are in the lower level of College Hall, not far from the Chapel.
Monday-Friday, 8:30 - 4:30. Special arrangements for evenings and even Saturdays can be made by calling 951-1294.
