Newton's Tower

The java applet below is written using JDK 1.1 event handling routines, and may not run on some browsers. If your browser does not show the applet, or gives an error, try this applet, which uses the old JDK 1.0 interface. The image in the graphic window below is 600 pixels by 650 pixels, which may be too large for some low resolution monitors. If the entire applet doesn't fit on your screen, try alternate versions at 1/2 size and 1/3 size.

Your browser can't execute this applet. Make sure your browser has java enabled. If it does, and you still see this message, you may have to update to a newer browser.

The Earth image in the applet was taken by Apollo 17 astronauts as they traveled toward the Moon. The white patch at the bottom is Antarctica. Africa and the Arabian Peninsula are visible at the top of the image. The large island off the coast of Africa is the Malagasy Republic. Newton's Tower seems to have been built somewhere in the Middle East, perhaps on the site of the legendary Tower of Babel. The image was obtained from the NASA Observatorium image gallery.
