Shameless Acts of Nepotism:

Anybody in the market for stained glass should check out

   Creative Glassworks

   1875 Mealy Street
   Atlantic Beach, FL 32233
   Phone: (904) 247-0064
   Toll free: (888) 606-0630
   Fax: (904) 246-7188

The artist, Kirk Reber, specializes in architectural stained and leaded glass. He does great work. (He also happens to be my cousin, but don't hold that against him!

And, as long as you're looking at windows, you might want to check out some window treatments from Design III (a.k.a. Jack Adgate). Jack designs and manufactures upholsery, seating, curtains, drapes and other various items for interior decor. We used to be neighbors, until he moved his family out to the suburbs. He is a master of all things spatial, mechanical, and electrical.

If you prefer auditory art to visual, check out the exquisite vocal harmonies of The Chromatics, an a cappella group that proves that not all scientists are total geeks. If you live in the DC area, you can catch them live. If not, you can buy their debut CD, First Light or their great Christmas CD, Unwrapped (MP3s of some songs available for download). And if you're fortunate (or unfortunate) enough to be a science educator, be sure to look for the next for the next AstroCappella CD, due out soon. (At the incredible price of free, the first CD and education packet sold out pretty fast, but the good news is that all the songs from that disc are now available to anyone as free MP3s.)

(Photo by Michael Bryant / Inquirer) Turning to the culinary arts (don't I know a lot of artistic folk for a techie?), if you're interested in a great pub-dining experience, check out The Standard Tap at 2nd and Poplar in Philadelphia. The food is fantastic, and while I can't personally comment on the beer, I hear that's pretty good, too. But you don't have to take my word for it, they've been getting rave reviews from the Inquirer's Magazine, Weekend, Lifestyle, and (of course) Food sections, as well as from the City Paper (they also got a mention in their article on local beers).  And Philadelphia Magazine chose them as "Best Bar Food on a Beer Budget" in their Best of Philly 2000 issue. So how can you go wrong? Sure, you could try to make the Smoked Trout Salad yourself, but why go to the trouble when you know it'll never be as good as the original? I know the chef/co-owner personally, and have been friends with one of the bartenders for longer than I care to mention. So, if you mention my name, you're bound to get a look that says you're crazy and a categorical denial. You definitely won't get a discount. Come to think of it, I don't even get a discount. Hey, why don't I get a discount.... (OK, maybe I do get a small discount - sorry if I offended, Dolly! You're generosity is unparallelled. Truly legendary. Now, about that trout salad....) On the other hand, if you're looking for useful software for your PC, you might want to check out Spearit Software, Inc. which is run by lifelong friend of mine. OK, the selection is kind of limited so far, but I'm sure it will continue to improve!
(So what's the cat got to do with it? Nothing, really. That was the symbol his wife used for her mail order business -cat merchandise- which is no longer in business. But it's a nice image, and I didn't have another one to use, so...)

However, I see nothing unethical in providing a little publicity for relatives and friends.

Friends and Family:

As long as I'm plugging other web pages. While the folks below might not always want to confess any association with me, if they're honest they have no choice, and I still count them among my friends and relations. These guys aren't selling anything, so if you have nothing better to do, you can check out their web sites:

Hmmm, kind of a short list. It's not that I haven't got more friends, just that most of my friends don't have web pages. Or maybe they just don't tell me about them, for fear I might put links to them here. Couldn't say I'd blame them....
